By partnering with a high-quality summer camp provided by UNL and 4H, the MEP was able to provide high school students with experiences that they had never had before at a lower cost than would have been possible building the program ourselves.

Focus:

Student Success

Target Audience:

High School Migrant Students, Migrant Education Program (MEP) Staff

Synopsis:

In June 2016, the ESU 13 Migrant Education Program sent 10 migrant students to the Big Red Summer Academic Camp at the University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL). This camp highlights careers such as Veterinary Science, Engineering, Film Making, Outdoor Sciences, Culinary Sciences, and more.

Lessons Learned

By partnering with a high-quality summer camp provided by UNL and 4H, the MEP was able to provide high school students with experiences that they had never had before at a lower cost than would have been possible building the program ourselves. An added bonus for our students was meeting other high school students from across the state, giving them connections to other students who share the same career interests. Because of the great results, Big Red Summer Academic Camps are now offered annually to our high school migrant students.

Student impacts:

Students select the career path they are interested in, and spend the week getting first-hand experience in that career area. Students also meet and interact with professionals in the career. Participation in competitions allow winners to earn scholarships to UNL. Several of our migrant students won scholarships for $500 the week they attended. The camp is held annually for students across Nebraska, but the tuition of $300 - $600 per child is cost prohibitive for migrant parents. The MEP funds tuition and provides transportation to the camp. For these students, this small tangible start takes them from having an idea of possibly attending a university to making goals and planning to make it happen.
